Observation details
***LIFE BIRD*** First found by Dorian Anderson 2 April. 3rd state record. Other records as listed in Robbins BOM (2020): Photograph: adult male, 2-3 Apr 1994, Busch, St. Charles Co. (JVB, RA et al.); ad male, photos, 19-21 Apr 2013, near Sumner, Chariton Co. (A. Weiss et al.). Today, bird was found by many Mennonite birders after Jim and I had searched the same area 45 minutes prior. Observed bird with many for at least 30 minutes after Chris Barrigar pointed it out for me. - Observed at about 500 yards with *many* Northern Shovelers, GW Teal, BW Teal, and Am. Coots. Not as easy to pick out as I thought it would be, particularly when it was feeding. - Adult male, not to be mistaken with any other expected sp. - Seemed to be sticking to itself, but as Chris pointed out, a female Blue-winged had quite an interest in it, joined often by a male Blue-winged. - A "teal" approximately same size and shape as nearby Blue-winged. - Pale gray flanks. - Dark brown head with bold white stripe over eye.
