Media notes
HEAVILY edited to try and remove wind and excess noise. High-pass filter at 1khz. 3 faint notes (also faint smudge in spectogram) at 0.5 sec, 1.5 sec, and 2.3 sec. Note at 1.5 sec is the best of three, faintly visible at around 2k hertz as would be expected with a good recording.
Observation details
35.042992, -106.483920 approximate location of bird. We stood here (35.042664, -106.482790). While standing at the south end of Open Space fence line where it meets the Airbase fencline, was tracking a probably Townsend's Solitaire flaying directly away to west into the neighborhood, this bird flew across our view in binoculars from right to left across the cul de sac appearing to land in the top of taller of two pine trees on right side of driveway at 1735 Soplo Rd. Appearance was a slender all dark/black bird with a long tail, short bill. Bird was perhaps similar in length to the presumed Solitaire flying away, but noticeably more slender. Would not have identified on that alone however, promptly after landing the bird began calling the familiar and primary PHAI call of the rising single note and repetitive whistle "hooip........hooip.......hooip.......hooip.......". This repeated at least 8-10 times before either getting quiet or wind picking up. As all four of us were standing there again, the bird called which all of us plainly heard "hooip........hooip.......hooip.......hooip......." again 10 or so times. Notes were maybe a second or just less than a second apart. The pine tree the bird was in kept the PHAI hidden from sight, but it landed near the top as is typical. At that point, we would have had to cross a private property lot to get to the cul de sac, which we did not do. After we looked around the open space which was pretty dead, we drove back around to the cul de sac and were not able to relocate the bird for photos. Tried a recording although wind directly into the microphone made that difficult. Will see if I can pull something out from the recording we did get by filtering out wind noise. Terrible recording conditions due to being against the wind, but may have helped sound carry actually.
