***STATE LIFER*** - 4th record for MO and first since 20 Oct – 4 May 2001-2, Schell-Osage (J. and E. Zellmer et al.). - Found by Sarah Kendrick and the Brown-headed nuthatch nest surveyors 20 March. - Observed today for over about 1.5 hours by Jim Malone and I (later many others listed below). - Appears to be an adult. Dark crimson red face, pale gray collar, dark glossy green body and tail, rosy-red washed stomach. - Very crow/jay like in flight. - Slightly larger than the Red-headed Woodpeckers in area. - Bird observed caching many acorns as it flew around burned pine savannah field in middle of the Current River Pinery. Landed on many perches, often at very top of dead snags. - Enjoyed with many other MO birders - Steve and Debbie Martin, Tommy and Jess Goodwin (and Harlan in tow), Klee Bruce, Isaac Goes, Cindy Bridges, Reva Dow. Others coming in as we were leaving.
