Observation details
known location for at least a small number of birds. in this area: (34.0454192, -80.1318127). black and white woodpeckers with blackish wings and back extensively barred with white, bold white cheek patch with black malar connecting to black wrapping around face. larger than DOWO, smaller than RBWO. squeaky calls, thinner-sounding than those of HAWO; weak, quick, rapid drum often fading at end. flying around, calling, and chasing each other a lot, generally staying in upper third of the pines. definitely at least four birds, watched four in a row fly the same direction, each calling. photos and audio. lifer
