Observation details
Continuing rarity by the west shore lifeguard station. Absurdly cooperative, preening and resting along out about 120 meters out, but floated in to about 10 meters off the shore. Basic plumage (second year?) and superficially similar to a Pacific Loon, but crown rounded in the back with a slight peak in front of the eye. White flanks extensive and rising to a peak towards the rear before dropping quickly at the thighs. Thighs white with black posterior line of feathers not extending across the vent (seen when the bird rolled over while preening). The white of the throat extended up slightly to the rear of the auriculars, vaguely recalling the pattern of a Red-necked Grebe.
