Observation details
NOTE: The below notes were written before and after I wrongly attributed this observation to "Slate-colored Seedeater." Audio recording is at least as good for Gray Seedeater, and I had not realized the bill color of Gray (nominally black) was not conclusive for i.d. The rejection of the habitat seems casual. Thanks to the eBird moderation team for taking the time to listen. ORIGINAL NOTES: Added with some remaining uncertainty after reviewing audio and despite various psychological obstacles, including: Bird originally misidentified by me as Gray Seedeater [habitat wrong--this bird was in dense moist forest edge, not grassy open scrub]; presence of Dull-Colored Grassquit also recorded earlier on the walk and later at the marsh, [in my view diagnostic recording]. Furthermore there are only five records for Slate-colored at Arrierito in eBird. I noted at the time a pair of seedeaters, in the dark cover of a roadside bush, the putative male "all gray with contrasting pale beak, the female more in line with the generic dull-olive-yellow” aspect of many, many female seedeaters and grassquits. I noted a “white chevron in the wing.” The white belly on this bird likely went unseen. Individual analysis of multiple phrases of recording on Birdnet returns high degree of certainty for Slate-colored, but to my ear is not diagnostic based on listening to other recordings in eBird; particularly the trill section in this recording is delivered more slowly. There are few recordings available for comparison, and none from Antioquia. Colombian recordings in particular sound pretty good. 10/29/2023 A few of the recordings I added after completing this trip have now clearly been listened to and rated. This one is now showing up in my UNCONFIRMED media search, suggesting to me that a moderator listened to it and is not convinced. I'm leaving this up for now given the quite good visual description above; I did not see the bird singing, but timing on the recording aligns with the sighting. 2/2/24 CHANGED ATTRIBUTION TO GRAY SEEDEATER
