Observation details
Both birds appeared calling from the ridge above and went down onto the narrow trail in front of me at 6.45 pm (sunset 6.23). continued calling there, about two meters apart. as they did so, they pointed their heads forward and somewhat down with fluffed-up neck feathers. After a few minutes flying up and perched in leafless trees nearby, about 5 meter above ground level, some 10 m apart. calling there continuously (alternating) until 6:59 p.m. note the introductory "buzz", which remined me on a close by flying hummingbird or large horsefly; most probably not made by rubbing feathers. 340 m asl; cloudy, no wind (Bft 0), 13 Celsius, moon increasing (3/4) to my knowlegde, very little is known about this Woodcock's courtship. Sound file (taken from phone video) processed by Patrick Franke (also uploaded on xeno-canto)
