Observation details
When the opportunity presented itself to see the rare ex-Seicercus wintering in your state, we jumped on it instantly bringing the long wait to fruition. We braved the anxiety & travel to get a glimpse of this gem of a warbler and gaze at it beauty. It proved to be a tough customer, unwilling to reveal itself quickly. After lot of coordinated effort, Shishir chose another direction and struck gold; a Golden-spectacled warbler! What a magnificent bird, you can't avoid marveling at its beauty. The reorganization under Phylloscopus, split and eventual renaming really robs the fun to view, imagine and see the dashing yellows and greens of this tiny beauty along with lovely yellow spectacles. The broken eye-ring at the back of the eye is a clincher along with the green sides to the bold black crown stripes. The bird does not call often and the random whistled notes are at his whim. True to Seicercus behaviour it sticks to undergrowth and low canopies trying to glean the tiny insects. It does take a pause to observe the surroundings for next potential meal. We observed it sallying for insects barely once or twice. It is during these short stops, it gives amazing views and gives calls. You need to be lucky to have unobstructed views but the handy pair of bins will do the job just right. It was a welcome change to our eyes trained to find, observe and identify the routine olive-green Phylloscopus warblers. This wintering range is definitely an interesting topic to ponder.
