Observation details
There may be some confusion in reports of birds in this area between albigula and branti. The range map in Wassink 2015 does not show branti south of Lake Balkhash. Our birds showed a clear whitish break in the black between the ear-coverts and breastband. The excellent Birds.kz website records all birds in the Kokpek area as branti with albigula present only higher up in the Tien Shan. Our birds were clearly branti. Perhaps albigula and branti occur together at lower altidudes in winter and segregate altitudinally during breeding - Wassink gives the lower elevational limit for breeding albigula as 2000m; the drinking pool at Bugali (which itself is on the slopes above the Sogaty Plain) is at 1,270m.
