2 female-immature type Cassin's finches
Observation details
2 female-immature type Cassin’s finches investigated feeder and ground below feeder for a few minutes— just long enough to grab a few bad photos through a window— and flushed with other birds when a red-shouldered hawk flew by. monitored for hours for their return, searched nearby trees and yards, did not see them again. compared with resident house finches, these showed bold superciliary and malar stripes, larger bill, pale back streaks, and paler overall coloration. separated from purple finch by deep bill with straight culmen; longer primary projection; shorter and more notched tail; thin, dense, and crisp breast streaks; sharp and crisp undertail covert streaks; and pale eye arcs. did not vocalize, silent.
