Observation details
Adult. Size of a small HERG. Initially noticed dark eye followed by wingtips. Collection of traits was wrong for Iceland and increasingly consistent with GWGU. Dark eye, slightly smudgy head/neck, gray mantle with nearly consistent gray wingtips, small terminal spots on folded wingtips were wrong for ICGU, face and bill not gentle and dainty as in ICGU, spread wing in flight showed smudged gray on outer primaries with very limited white on p10-p6. Photos to come. Seen from around 1:00 - 2:00 from end of pier at Old Coast Guard Station in the harbor in the middle or just east of the river mouth. Flew to breakwall west of river mouth and then took off as all birds in the area lifted and I was unable to relocate.
