Observation details
On several instances, a bird held head low to the water, just above the surface of the water, swam quickly toward another bird, and then "ran" and chased another across the pond. One bird climbed up on dead stalks of Thalia dealbata (Powdery Thalia) approximately three feet from the bridge, tapped feet multiple times on dead vegetation as if checking it for stability or packing it, lowered her body and moved it from side to side, lowered her body completely down to the vegetation with an occasional soft cluck vocalization. The bird preened occasionally. A second bird remained two feet away in the shallow water preening itself on and off. We stood approximately three feet away and watched them for approximately five minutes. We finally left and then returned about 10 minutes later. The birds were in the same positions and engaged in the same behaviors. At least three ribbon snake were very close by, but neither bird seemed to be concerned.
