Observation details
In grasses around the dam wetland, quite close to the water edge (up to 30m). One male flying into papyrus seen only, and one pair photographed in the same bush together. Male had noticeably pale yellow wings, paler than the rest of the golden body except for the tail of a similar shade. Darker orange-brown patches were restricted to the head and throat, with dark eyes due to the iris being only slightly lighter than the pupil, unlike how the eye would be for African Golden-Weaver. The female also showed a bicoloured bill with dark upper mandible and pale lower mandible, as well as a darker eye line on the brown face. According to eBird, not previously recorded this side of the Uluguru Mountains, but this site held at least one pair and likely more, since we visited the site extremely briefly. However, Oschadleus et al. (2021) shows a Tanzania Bird Atlas map with the site located for the species. Amazing to find this species so recently re-elevated to species status!
