Observation details
Was taking lots of photos of gulls off the back of the CM-Lewes ferry as it came into dock at Lewes. Reviewing them a few days later I found two photos of this bird. It is presumably 4th-cycle, almost adult, with some dark on the primary coverts and faint marbling on central tail feathers. Thayer's seems the best fit for this bird: the outer webs of the outer primaries are dull, not glossy black; inner webs are darkish-grey; P5 has only a very small mark and there are large tongue tips to P6-8. The eye is darkish, not strikingly pale, and the orbital ring seems to be pink not yellow/orange. The legs and feet look a deep pink color. Head and bill structure seem OK for a male Thayer's and this form often has as much or more dark in the wing as an adult. We do get "white-winged" HERG in winter but these differ in a number of ways: the black that is present is usually glossy black, and the inner webs are pale grey not darkish grey, some bare parts colors would also be expected to be different. Did not notice this bird at the time and only found 2 photos of it. ID discussed on N American Gulls FB page.
