Media notes

Adult female Sooty Grouse calling from large Jefferey Pine and Incense Cedar near the parking area used for the sound recording workshop. She was calling and moving from branch to branch. As more recordists converged on her location, she became more agitated. She gave several unique calls during the cut (8:04.3). During the second cut, you can hear a low amplitude, high-pitched call (prominent around 6:34) — this is a just-out-of-the-nest young that appeared to have just dried off after hatching. Once we saw this little one on the ground we backed off and left and the adult female quieted down. At 12:39.7 the female lunged from a higher branch to a lower branch, heading in our direction, and began to attack a large pine cone. This little one can be heard well here too. Other Behaviors: Emit Distress Calls. Equipment Notes: SD 702 HPF on (80Hz, -12dB/octave). Elevation: 2007 m.
