Observation details
We heard a series of loud down-slurred whistles sounding like maniacal laughter which turned out to be this woodcreeper. A highly variable, cryptic species, it may be divided into two distinctive subspecies groups. This is the southernmost "L. a. praedatus," a member of the nominate group characterized by heavier ventral streaking and browner, less ruddy back. Woodcreepers are a unique group of Neotropical bark gleaners. In the past they were placed in their own family, Dendrocolaptidae, but based on new genetic research they are now classified in the subfamily Dendrocolaptinae embedded within the Ovenbirds "Furnariidae."
