Observation details
Still fairly common but declining, this is a female showing a dark "comma" behind the eye instead of the bold black mask of the adult male. This is the nominate subspecies, but a paler race (P. d. berlepschi) found in central Brazil may be a separate species. Historically, the gnatcatchers were classified as members of the old world flycatchers or old world warblers. However more recent genetic studies have elevated them to their own family, the Polioptilidae, most closely related to wrens.
