Observation details
This is a male. Females lack red in their black mustache. Closely related to the flickers, this species also specializes on eating ants. It can be divided into two groups which have been treated as separate species in the past. The black patch at the rear of the mustache is characteristic of the Golden-breasted group and perhaps that is what it is. But this individual appears to be somewhat intermediate between the Green-barred and Golden-breasted subspecies groups. This location is not far from the area where the two are known to intergrade along the Rio Paraná and Rio Uruguay. Corrections are welcome.
