Observation details
I like the intense stare in its eye. This is probably a male. Females and young are duller lacking the deep purple color on the head and chest.Formerly included in the more inclusive genus "Columba" they were moved to "Patagioenas" in 2003). Two well defined subspecies are recognized. This is the nominate race found in the lowlands. A montane subspecies has a white slash on its wings and a more scaly appearance to its wing-coverts. It is sometimes split under the name White-winged Pigeon (Patagioenas albipennis).
