Observation details
This is the most southerly rail in South America ranging all the way to Tierra del Fuego. It is sometimes considered conspecific with the nearly identical Blackish Rail (Pardirallus nigricans) which lacks the bluish & reddish bill base. Both species were formerly placed with the typical rails in the genus "Rallus" but Olson (1973) found these two have dramatically different osteology. In particular the sternum is much broader and the nasal cavity much shorter in "Pardirallus." This is presumably the nominate race characterized by more mottled lower back and larger size.
