K-Kerr and Kerr call

Observation details

Count based upon location of birds observed and when calling. More than one calling at times. Habitat is consistent with a primarily freshwater/ slightly brackish area along the Ortega River - brushy marshland with grasses, small deciduous trees and mallow. Some tidal influence. The photos and video were taken in shaded areas. When the rails crossed into sunlight they were more reddish-orange brown than they appear in the video. Heavily spotted upperparts, black centers in tertials. Calls were consistent: either the kek call or the k-kerr call. The birds making the k-kerr call would sometimes drop the opening kek. The grunt duet call is from two rails observed walking along the edge of the water and into a brushy area where they started this call. Video at https://flic.kr/p/TuzYnc
