Observation details
About the size of a Herring Gull, but more robust. Stong direct flight was markedly faster than gulls. White wing flashes and reddish specking, otherwise all dark. This one had a little white around the eye, which is not uncommon in this species. Came in just before noon to harass gulls in the wake, then moved off to sit on the water. Though not seen on every trip, this is not an unexpected species in winter off of the Outer Banks. Photos.
