Observation details
Unexpected at this location. Among robins and starlings on mowed grass in Symphony Woods. I thought dove at first when I saw the bird huddled on the ground and showing buff color with dark spots on back. Noticed how it pumped its body up and down. After using bins, camera zoom clarified woodcock. I stayed at distance on the path, but noticed that as I tried photos from different angles, the bird was turning its head as if keeping an eye on me. It started walking slowly and continued to bob up and down (just like the book says -- Sibley). On return pass, I walked along the other side of the area with sun behind me, but I did not find it again. Robins and starlings still present. Someone was walking a dog all over the same area then, which is to be expected at this location.
