Observation details
Photos and video with audio. Calling immature male. One of two Orchard Orioles seen in the botanic garden this winter. This one was first found here in the Children's Garden 12/17/22 by Eli Gross. Dropped pin: https://goo.gl/maps/SaYF7WctjGucbhTf8. A rare migrant and winter visitor to California, they normally breed in the Eastern United States and winter in Middle America. Orchard Oriole is the smallest oriole in North America. Females and immature males such as this closely resemble diminutive Hooded Orioles. Note the straighter more delicate bill, and relatively short tail in comparison with Hooded Oriole. This is presumably the nominate North American race. Despite the name Oriole, these birds are in a totally different family from the Old World Oriolidae. They are actually New World Blackbirds, Icteridae.
