Observation details
A real shame I didn’t have my big camera with me as large squall of rain had recently passed and I suspected it might rain again soon. Thankfully the iPhone 14 max has a hell of a camera and I was able to take an identifiable picture of the bird. It was a bright male. Large, chunky songbird with a medium length squared tail and a heavy dull greenish-yellow beak. Overall a bit larger than a Spindalis, with an obviously heavier and longer bill. The bird’s plumage was bright red all over with a noticeably peaked crown. Seen at the following coordinates: (18.1573714, -66.9994904) maybe 300 meters from the parking area. This bird breeds along the river near my house in New Mexico and I am very familiar with the species and I have seen them all throughout North and South America during my bird tours. There is a small stand of fruiting trees nearby along the trail, perhaps it will stay around. Photos shortly.
