Observation details
Recordings and video. Found earlier today by Daniel Gilman at 37.655 N, 120.929 W. A small, short tailed and brown wren with faint supercilium, heavily barred all over. Calls a double or triple “chimp-chimp”, with much tone. Reminiscent to me of a Song Sparrow, and less dry and more tonal that a Pacific Wren. To me, Winter Wrens tend to have colder plumage, especially in the flanks, than Pacific, but I was not able to assess these marks from the looks I had. Still, the calls sounded great to me, so I think that’s what this was.
