Observation details
Continuing bird, first found yesterday by Kevin Floyd. Apparently the second El Paso County record (following an October record by Barry Zimmer: https://ebird.org/checklist/S64233418), and third spring record for the greater El Paso-Las Cruces area. A gorgeous ASY black-and-white male, rather large for a Warbler (about as large as a Yellow-rumped, but with a shorter tail). Solid black crown (the “poll”) extending down to the eye. White lower half of the cheek, with broad black malar extending back to the nape, isolating the white cheek from the rest of the paler portions of the body. The bill was dark with pale orange-ish tomium. The nape was pale gray with dark streaks, contrasting with the crown and the back, which was dark with pale stripes. Dark streaks across the flanks, contrasting with the clean white under parts and under tail coverts. The wings were dark with two pale wing bars, and pale yellow-greenish edges to the secondaries. The tail was short, with the outer-most rectricies (visible from below) mostly white edged in black. The legs and feet were orange. I heard the bed call several times, including thing high ‘seep’ (recorded), and a couple of ‘zeep’ flight calls. Excellent views, but I had a hard time getting digibin photos; I’ve included a couple of the best I managed.
