Observation details
Continuing rarity, found behind campsite 64 at 32.3905, -110.7047 (essentially exactly at the hotspot pin). Overall, a fairly typical Empidonax, a little larger than nearby the Cordillerian Flycatcher. Generally olive green above, dull greenish-gray below, with a somewhat paler throat. The crown was distinctly peaked, reminiscent of a Wood-Pewee. The bill was rather long, with a completely dark maxilla and a complete light orange mandible, quite different from the bill pattern of Dusky, Hammond's, or Gray Flycatchers. There was a pale off-white spot behind the eye, not really an eyering but very teardrop-shaped, with some pale just in front of the eye. The wings were relatively dark with off-white wingbars and tertial edgings; the primary projection was moderately long. There was a slight notch in the tail, which the bird did not wag, dip, flick, or move in any other way that several other species of Empids habitually do. The bird was calling more or less constantly, a "piip piip piip"-type call, of which I was able to make several recordings (a somewhat annoying endeavor, as there was a fair amount of traffic on Rose Canyon Road, most of which seemed to be monstrous diesel trucks).
