Observation details
First reported by Kimball Garrett at the Sonny Bono Union Tract pond on 1 April. Relocated by Guy McCaskie the morning of 2 April, then he showed it to us later that day in the afternoon. We could not locate the bird the following day, 3 April. This male green-winged teal was in the company of two females of undetermined sub-species. It had no marks indicating hybridization with American. The bird had a distinctive white bar running horizontally along the top of the flanks. There was no indication, or even a ghost image, of a vertical line between the breast and flanks. During the course of our viewing through scopes, we observed both sides of the bird, and confirmed a similar pattern on each side. The face pattern was difficult to discern, since it held its bill under water frequently as it dabbled. In the brief moments when it held its head up, we could briefly see the a thin, white delineation between the green face and rusty crown, and green face and rusty throat. The pattern is difficult to describe, but somewhat visible on a few of the photos attached.
