Observation details
Along a gated canal, was a large wader sitting atop a pole. On size and general shape, it appeared to be a stork. It was badly lit, but had a darkish top of the head, white neck, and black wings and body. I saw no indication of leg bands. As I tried to get closer for a photo with a small digital camera, it flew off to the northeast, showing a contrasting white rump and tail. The wings were all dark. Several of these birds had gotten loose from MetroZoo during Hurricane Andrew, and storks (White Stork) have been documented living 30-40 years.
