Observation details
Two couples were heard about 1km apart, presumably the same couple (?). One of the adults was seen. Raspy calls were heard both in combination with adult calls and also for a long period alone. These are presumably begging calls of the female. (I considered for a moment Indian Roller that got upset by the presence of the owls, but it would be unlikely that this bird continued calling alone for a long period in total darkness). Besides single hoots (territorial calls), long accelerating series and 'pant-hooting' can be heard. According to Magnus Robb, these vocalizations are typical for the early breeding period, during nest site selection and copulation.
