Observation details
**Very rare inshore, often involving oiled or injured individuals, but natural inshore occurrence might be increasing in recent years; highly pelagic in our region. Large alcid with long, slender bill and classic basic-plumage, including bridled face pattern; short tail; coarse brownish streaking on flanks. Preening and bathing for minutes at a time; ph. This individual continues inside the inlet, following MMcB's discovery of two individuals on 22 Jan: a molting bird at Montauk Point and a basic-plumaged bird at Culloden Point. It is likely (but by no means certain) that recent records from Culloden and here represent the same individual (see comments under TBMU here: https://ebird.org/checklist/S127027060).
