Observation details
Photos, video. Female? Small dark gray-brown duck with a bold white circle behind the eye, 2nd, larger but less bright patch on lower face at lower base of bill, 3rd smaller spot in front of eye. Very active in rapids while foraging. I first found this bird on January 20th, and misidentified it as a White-winged Scoter. I passed the observation to 4 local friends. Within an hour, one reported back to me and informed me that it was a Harlequin Duck. I was actually looking for a Bufflehead based on a Facebook video from December 19th. Having seen the video, I am convinced it was the same bird. Over 50 people have seen this very cooperative bird since I reported it.
