Observation details
Continuing 1st-cycle female. Initially fairly close off pier, then drifted south into bay at gave great views, only 75m out at times. After a while was spooked by the antics of two otters, flying out & slightly south before landing maybe 500m out where tricky to see in choppy sea. Looked very chunky and almost reminiscent of Surf Scoter, but bill with not such an obvious broken nose as some deglandii. Bump on bill fairly prominent however, and bill broad towards tip. Low sunny light poor for digiscoping, but did show up the square border between brown loral feathering and bill, extending below large-looking nostrils. Paler on belly/lower breast compared with rest of dark brown plumage (diffuse pale loral & cheek patches & white secondaries aside), quite noticable when airborne. Digiscoped flight shots seem to show narrow, pointed rectrices.
