Observation details
First cycle large Gull, rather short-and broad winged, showing very pronounced and extensive "pale window" on inner primaries (including inner- and outer webs) visible also from below. Weak contrast between tail and rump, created by extensive dark brown sub-terminal band plus isolated dark bars on the basal half of the tail, with strong dark spotting on rump and upper tail coverts. Head pattern showing pale whitish forehead as well as throat, dark eye-mask extending to crown and down the nape, heavy dark streaked colar around neck. Bill is two-coloured and pale tipped. Wing coverts still largely juvenile (pale faded brown). Greater overts showing barred / notched pattern. Heavy wear in tertials, greater coverts as well as wing- and tail tip. Pale mantle and -scapulars due to wide spaced whitish (light creamy to light greyish) feathers with very fine brown barring. Dark centres in fresh scapulars (replaced in post-juvenile moult).
