Observation details
As the attached photos will show, there were two different birds. Both were in close proximity of each other. Eventually, the pair moved closer together and exchanged calls. Those exchanges can be heard at the 40 second mark in the sound recording. One of the flycatchers had lost tail feathers making it much easier to distinguish between the two birds. Initial observation was made as noticing a light gray bird "hawking" insects from a lower limb of an apple tree. That is what caused me to stop my vehicle and then slowly approach. Upon first glance with binoculars, my thoughts were geared toward perhaps a Great-crested Flycatcher, due to the rusty colored wing patch and raised crown. But once that bird vocalized with the call heard in the recording, I realized it was a different species. It was as I was watching this initial bird, that I then heard a second vocalization about 20 feet from where I was observing the first bird. Being close to both birds provided me with opportunities to capture the images with my camera. The photographs and sound clip were examined and verified by experienced birders to confirm the species sighted. The sighting was on private property with no public access allowed.
