Observation details
Flagged as rare. First site record, second county record, eleventh state record. Matt Hafner once told me to check the flocks of LAGU here in September for a SAGU, and that's exactly how I found this bird. This bird was hugging the north shore of Cell 2C and was in the company of several LAGU. It left the cell twice but quickly reappeared. Many photos were obtained. I was able to show it to the birding tour as well as five of my coworkers. I last saw it flying out to join a large flock of LAGU feeding offshore, west of the island. The bird's bold black-and-white triangular wing patterning was especially striking in flight. I have been fortunate to find many rare birds onsite, but this was probably the rarest of them all.
