Observation details
Male and female present together. This is the same location as the Dec 29 report. Found at the end of the first Spruce tract. The area has several fallen trees, creating a bit of a clearing with a dead tree in the center, right by the road. You may even see bark peeled from the trunk. Female seen first on dead tree. Similar in appearance to Black-backed Woodpecker except for white pattern on back. Female flew across road and was joined by Male. Male showed yellow-cap and white pattern on back. Then both birds flew back to dead tree in direct sunlight. Will add photos when I get home to Michigan tomorrow.
