Observation details
Seen only briefly, heard only briefly. Small dark reddish brown stub tailed wren, vocalized a few chit notes and a chit-chit note. No photos; very short audio may possibly be useful….distinguished from a WIWR by virtue of the sharp, dry quality of the chits, sounding to my ear almost as if there were no vowels in the vocalization, only consonants as befits the PAWR. WIWR’s calls, on the other hand would sound more full-bodied….instead of “chit-chit” the WIWR call sounds to me like “chup.” Winter Wren has not been reported here since December 5 in spite of thorough searches, whereas Pacific Wren was last reported December 17 and is traditionally the resident wren of the season at this location.
