Observation details
Continuing birds, out at the end of the pier. I first scoped them from the beach, and could see that they were long-bodied, all-brown sea ducks. When I got out to the end of the pier, I was able to look straight down on them and watch them foraging on mussels that were growing on the pilings. They just sort of swam around, going in and out with the swell, and seemed to enjoy or at least tolerate each others company. Large, all-brown sea ducks with black bills. The heads were lighter than the bodies, sort of a caramel color, while the bodies were more of a cafe au lait. The back feathers, particularly the scapulars, had dark centers, and the tails were darker as well. The wings were dark, and I was a bit surprised at the primary projection. See photos and videos for more plumage and behavioral details.
