Observation details
**RARE** Continuing; first reported on 3 January 2023. Taller and larger-bodied than the nearby Sandhill Cranes. Blackish forehead and face and dark gray front of the neck contrasting with a white nape. At certain angles (see photo with the head down) a light gray hindcrown is visible. I also noted a very small red bare patch in the hindcrown but only when the head was held at a certain angle. Black flight feathers contrasting with the otherwise gray wings when observed in a short flight and when spreading the wings on occasion. Elongated tertials (forming the bustle) were quite noticeable. More uniformly gray body than the Sandhill Cranes. Yellowish bill. Birds of the World indicates that adult plumage is obtained in 3 years. The dark areas of the head and neck being dark gray and not black suggests that this might be a subadult bird. Observed in the field to the west of Brady Loop Road East. Observation point was 46.98115, -123.50162.
