Observation details
Possible juvenile Lesser Scaup found by Mick McNaghten previous day. Originally considered that hybrids could not be ruled out, but may fall within morphological range for 1w female of this species, seems favourable when compared with greater availability of photos than in 2011 (e.g https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/418535581). Pro LS feautre include head shape, greyish vermiculations on flanks as well as dusky inner primaries contrasting which whitish secondaries. Unusual features for LS are all-dark bill (although possible for juv. in retarded state of moult?) and potentially bill shape, with lower mandible rather straight and whole bill appearing quite long in some images. Further opinions being sought.
