Observation details
Continuing bird found on 9/16 by Logan Kahle and Dessi Sieburth. Hanging out and actively foraging in the cypresses. Lighting was slightly better when we got here in the afternoon and we heard the pewee calling frequently and saw it pretty well given the weather. Pewee that seemed pretty light below, not much of a vested appearance, orange lower mandible, slight eyering that was difficult to discern, forked tail (which may just be individual variation). Mainly given a strange “qwip” call I’ve never heard before, almost empid-like. Have a few indistinguishable pewee calls and then let out a classic EWPE upslurred “pee-a-Wee!”. Fantastic bird for CA! Poor photos and probably a recording. Seen by many observers.
