Observation details
continuing juvenile bird; close in at the end of Quivira point. I had it swimming btwn Quivira point and the opposite jetty. It eventually swam out into the main channel. Large loon; significantly larger than Common Loons. Sits higher above the water line than the Common Loons. Mantle is lighter gray than Common's with distinct pale edges to mantle and scapular feathers, giving it a scalloped pattern on its back. Bill heavy and slightly upturned. Bill was pale to dull ivory in color. Head shape is blocky with a thick neck. A slight dusky wash across crown, face and side of neck, diffusing into white front of neck. Overall, a paler bird than adult and juvenile Common Loons. Photos provided
