Observation details
Definitely 2 different birds. See pictures. Both birds slightly larger than crows, which were nearby for comparison. I started my count when I saw the first Cooper's at 1020, sitting in the crab apple tree. I have alot of house sparrows so figured he was looking for a meal. He stayed around for 5-10 minutes, left empty clawed. This #1 hawk had a breast that was finely streaked with vertical markings. I continued my count and my other birds started showing up again since Hawk #1 had left. Hawk #2 showed up at 1050. This one, however, had a breast with markings that were horizontal and rusty-orange color. He first landed in the crab apple tree, then went to sit on top of my brush pile, where the sparrows hide out. He tried once for a bird but I did not see him catch anything. He continued hanging around the brush pile till I ended my count at 1115. Then at 1145 I saw him pop up out of the brush pile, shaking a few of his feathers, I wonder if he had eventually caught a bird and was in the brush pile eating. He was there only a few minutes more till one of my squirrels climbed up onto the brush pile, got quite close to the hawk, looked the hawk straight in the eye and only then did the hawk fly away! What fun!
