Observation details
Life bird #454 ABA #401 Did not give consideration to subspecies until afterward, when Matthew Young of the Finch Research Network commented on my photos and audio with the following characteristics (supplemented with Sibley's notes): Audio: Upslurred "quidip!" flight notes typical of Rocky Mountain/Interior West subspecies (sounding almost Western Tanager-ish) Phenotype: duller red than other subspecies, with extensive, entirely gray flanks, and only limited coloration on the breast, not extending down towards the belly/undertail coverts as in Taiga/Pacific types. Back (seen in the photo of the Cassin's Finch on the same checklist) shows no spotting (present on Pacific/Taiga, not on Rocky Mountain).
