Observation details
From my post: Only got the one quick look at it and then our poor images of the bird flying away. Looking at the photos mixed with impressions in the field I feel the bird is a POMARINE. Identification points include: In Life: The bird appeared dark and was noticeably larger than the Ring-billed Gulls. Showed a contrasting dark face with a pale head, that also contrasted with the body Strongly bicolored bill Barred underwing coverts that contrasted with the flanks. Contrasting undertail coverts From the Photos: Double underwing flash with a white bar on the primaries and dark tips with white bases to the primary coverts, forming another white bar Underwing coverts boldy barred and strongly contrast with the dark body Undertail coverts strongly barred and continue slightly onto the lower flanks and contrast strongly with the body. The dark face and pale head is somewhat visible. The one problem is that in life the uppertail coverts appeared only somewhat barred and only slightly contrasting with the back and the photos you can't really see it at all. I think though the glare of the sun likely affected this
