Observation details
Unbelievable nesting scene here on the island. As we approached we could see the clouds of MAFR flying over the island, but it wasn't until we were pulling up that we could see the true extent of the breeding population. The island is covered in small lime trees which were able to grow up over time from buildup of guano, and these trees were covered with frigatebird nests. The birds were everywhere - flying overhead up to a thousand feet high down to swooping low over the 5-10' trees, perched in the trees, sitting on nests. They were tame and allowed approach up to 3-4'. The air was filled with their little chirping calls and the bill rattles from the displaying males, some of whom had their huge red gular pouches puffed up in display looking like a big red balloon with a mis-matched elegant black shadow. Some of the males when they flew around would still have the pouch partially blown up. Sometimes when they landed in the trees their wings would still be caught up in the tree branches, looking like they crash landed.
