Observation details
Continuing on Mounds Pool 3, and apparently an uncommon but regular wintering species here. Large dabbling duck. Very dark brown/black overall with plain lighter greyish brown face and dull yellow-olive bill. High contrast whitish underwing. No white border on speculum. Loosely associating with mallards and clearly much darker. Also ruled out mottled duck because face was cold and dull, not contrasting much with the body (unlike the paler buffy face of MODU); furthermore, even in the splendid morning light, the body was drab and dark overall, lacking any warm buffy/rusty tones as in MODU. Bad scoped photos
