Observation details
Fantastic find by Katherine Figueroa! Male in stunning breeding plumage. Diving duck with a bright rufous head, silvery bill, beautifully patterned grayish flanks and a steep forehead. Hanging out with, and dwarfed by, the Mallards that occasionally harassed it - but standing his ground and aggressively responding whenever it happened. Seemingly intent on sleeping, waking up only when disturbed by the Mallards. Flushed once by a gull that was flying and vocalizing low overhead; hastily jumped into the water, but soon returned to the floating dock. Beautiful light, with the sun setting over the harbor behind my back, but also scattering off skyscraper windows and the water. County lifer, and a wonderful way to close off the year in Manhattan.
